DC's crane count still ranks as one of the highest among U.S. cities despite a decline in 2021.
According to Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB), the city has 35 construction cranes active as of this month. RLB's last quarterly crane index counted 45 cranes in DC.

"Since the last survey, new cranes have been erected for a utility facility, higher education residence hall, and a residential project. Work in the mixed-use and healthcare sectors stay unchanged," the latest RLB survey said about DC. "Although the number of residential projects has decreased, the market looks healthy as new apartment building projects emerge."
Despite the drop in the number of cranes in the sky, DC still has the third highest number of cranes in operation compared to the 13 cities RLB typically includes in the report. Los Angeles leads the way with 51 cranes, followed by Seattle with 39 cranes.
