There has been a lot of speculation over the years concerning the fate of the long-dormant land at the corner of Florida Avenue and Q Street NW (map). Now, DC's Department of Housing and Community Development has announced plans to bring affordable housing to that intersection.
Mi Casa plans to deliver the Barnett-Adan Apartments, a 24-unit affordable project, to a 12,000 square-foot lot at the intersection. The development will have a solar array and will include ground-floor commercial space, permanent supportive housing, and accessible and aging-in-place apartments.

The unit mix will include six one-bedrooms, 12 two-bedrooms and six three-bedrooms; five of the units will be for households earning up to 30 percent of median family income (MFI), five for households earning up to 50 percent MFI, eight for households earning up to 60 percent MFI, and six for households earning up to 80 percent MFI. Groundbreaking is expected within the next six months.
If you're experiencing déjà vu, this proposal from 3.5 years ago might be the cause. The site was also released for a request for proposals in 2016.
This is also not the only development planned for this corner. A stone's throw away at 1600 North Capitol Street NW (map), the owners of the 18,894 square-foot surface lot are seeking a two-year planned-unit development extension from the Zoning Commission (ZC). The ZC originally approved a PUD for the site in 2007 that would deliver 85-95 apartments above nearly 5,000 square feet of retail and 41 below-grade parking spaces.
