Its opening has been in the works for some time, but this Friday, the West End Cinema will open its doors to neighborhood cinephiles that have been starved of local big screen options for years.
The theater is located at 2301 M Street NW (map), the former location of the Inner Circle Theater which closed in early 2004. Like the E Street Cinema, the three-screen theater will operate as an independent movie theater and will show independent, art house, documentary, and classic films. The seats, projection equipment, and concessions stand are all still in place from when the theater closed its doors almost seven years ago, according to the West End Flier.
The arrival of the West End Cinema is exciting news to those in Dupont Circle and the West End that have been limited to the Georgetown Loews Theaters, the Regal Gallery Place multiplex, the historic Uptown Theater, and the aforementioned E Street Cinema for the past few years.
And fret not movie-goers who prefer blockbuster hits to indie feature: Even though the West End Cinema will be more Amelie than Iron Man, popcorn, candy and sodas will still be served.
