Welcome to Property Week, a week-long UrbanTurf series devoted to intriguing residential properties in the DC area and beyond. From a DC version of Wrigleyville to a Trinidad apartment building that will only offer five-bedroom apartments, this week is all about cool residences both near and far. Enjoy.
This week, UrbanTurf is featuring a renovated Brooklyn loft by the quirkily-named architecture firm Space Exploration.
The loft is located in an iconic building that was a factory in a past life on the Williamsburg waterfront. Space Exploration renovated the loft to accommodate the needs of a growing family.
The central feature of the double-height unit is the addition of a floor-to-ceiling book-shelving unit, which occupies the entire east wall.

Previously, the master bedroom took up the entire second floor and was open to the living area below. In order to accommodate the owners’ growing family, Space Exploration carved a second bedroom out of the upper floor and fronted both bedrooms with a tinted glass and steel wall. Window treatments were incorporated to control light, privacy and air flow.
Other renovations included extending the mezzanine, replacing the spiral staircase with a switchback staircase, and updating the kitchen. The kitchen renovations included handmade sourced tile work, new black countertops, and cabinetry extensions fronted with custom doors. Door handles are repurposed coat hooks painted to match the rest of the cabinetry.
