After years of contentious debate and a cumbersome approval process, the former Valero gas station at Pennsylvania Avenue and M Street NW has come down to make way for a new residential project.
As reported by Georgetown Metropolitan, over a year after Georgetown developer Eastbanc received zoning approval to redevelop the gas station at 2715 Pennsylvania Avenue NW (map), the station has been demolished.

The demolition makes way for a five-story building with eight residential units averaging 2,000 square feet each atop a restaurant with an outdoor seating area. Eduardo Souto de Moura is the architect on the project.
News of this redevelopment counters the recent controversy over a DC law that prevents gas stations from being redeveloped for other uses; a Petworth gas station owner recently filed suit.
