7001 Crail Drive, Bethesda, MD
This Week’s Find is a sprawling, 1960’s-built home in Montgomery County that has some surprising departures from contemporary design.
Architect Charles Moore, who built the 2,393 square-foot home, was known for his use of non-traditional materials and sometimes whimsical choices, like an open shower emerging from a sunflower in the middle of a room. In the case of this home, Moore’s touch gave the house more detail and obvious design than a typical modern home. Details include giant cutaways in the walls and hallways, as well as an open breezeway connecting the home to the garage. Unlike the right angles that can be found in most modern homes, this one is full of unusual corners.
Living Room
The listing agent tells us that the current owner, who is moving away from the area, renovated the home a few years ago with high-end touches like Italian blown glass tiles and a crushed glass countertop. Other cool spaces include a meditative Japanese Garden and a lofted office above the garage. The home’s many windows look out into the forested lot, which take up almost an entire acre.
