This Week's Find: A Morris-Day on McLean's Massachusetts Avenue
This Week's Find is a Morris-Day home in McLean — not The Time's Morris Day, but the design-build firm known for working throughout northern Virginia.
The current owners have lived in the five-bedroom house since 2015 and enlisted designer Heather Blelloch and Sonnenday Custom Builders to update the kitchen, which intersperses white custom cabinetry with cherry-stained wood that appoints some of the cabinets and conceals the hood above the stove. The renovation removed a peninsula to open the kitchen to the adjacent family room, replacing it with a breakfast bar island with a navy blue base and the sink built into the silestone countertop.

The kitchen is also open to a sunroom-like breakfast nook, which has cherry-stained cabinetry that creates a beverage bar. Windows surround the glass backdoor in the family room, leading out to an updated screened porch overlooking the stone patio beyond. A few steps down in the backyard, a lawn area runs alongside the deck for a heated pool.
While the front door opens into a two-story foyer with a staircase, there is also a second set of stairs accessible through the two-car garage, which open into a tiled hall with built-in benches on either side of a side door. A separate mudroom here has walls of built-in cabinets and cubbies.
The rear stairs lead up to a landing lined with built-ins, creating an office nook; a hall beyond is also lined with built-ins leading to a bedroom suite. The owner's bedroom is accessible through a sitting room and has a private washer/dryer closet, along with two walk-in closets on the way to the updated en-suite bath.
The lower level rec room has an updated corner bar, and there is also a guest bedroom, full bath, and separate laundry/storage room on this level.
