DC's landmark Studio Theatre is joining the ranks of establishments on the 14th Street Corridor looking to capitalize on their prime location.
One month after coming under new leadership, the 14th and P Street (map) institution is looking to construct a partial rear addition while reconfiguring and renovating many aspects of the interior. The theater has applied for a modification of consequence of a 15 year-old Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) order which gave the organization relief from rear yard requirements, allowing for a two-story rear addition.

The new application requests an extension of the rear yard relief in order to extend the third floor of the building atop the existing addition, creating a backstage for one of the four interior theaters. Hickok Cole is the architect.
"The project will modernize Studio’s facilities, create new interior spaces, open its street façades, and substantially improve its ability to produce exceptional high-quality theatre and re-imagine its public spaces, making Studio Theatre a more welcoming and open 14th Street institution," the application files with the BZA states.
The proposed plans will be presented to the ANC 2F Community Development Committee tomorrow. Representatives for Studio Theatre and Hickok Cole declined comment for this article.
