Streetcar to Connect Arlington and Alexandria
A streetcar may be coming to Northern Virginia by as early as 2019.
The Alexandria City Council and the Arlington County Board voted Saturday to move forward with a streetcar project to connect the two areas, reported NBC4.
The project would connect the two jurisdictions via the Route 1 corridor.
Alexandria and Arlington are going about construction separately, which will lead to a time gap between the construction of the two lines. Arlington County voted Saturday to begin preliminary engineering on their section — which runs from Crystal City to Four Mile Run — in time to open to the public by 2019.
Alexandria, on the other hand, is going to first undergo an alternatives assessment for the project. They are also busy constructing a Metro station at Potomac Yard. Construction for their portion of the streetcar line, if they decide to move forward, would be about two years behind Arlington’s.
