High property taxes can be an unexpected thorn in the side of a new homebuyer that gets excited about a great looking property, but doesn’t do all their homework. Local real estate blogger (one of our favorites) Dewita Soeharjono recently posted a brief but informative piece about property taxes in areas of NoVa and DC.
Below are the property tax rates for select Northern Virginia neighborhoods, effective July 1, 2009.

If you are looking to save money on taxes, the best places to buy are in Fairfax and Alexandria where you will pay about $8 per $1,000 of assessed value. In Manassas, Loudoun and Herndon, you will pay closer to $11 per $1,000.
For virtually all residential properties in DC, the property tax rate works out to $8.50 per $1,000 of the assessed value of the property. For additional information, see Dewita’s post here.
