News of the Day: Four Walmart Stores to DC
On Tuesday, Councilmembers Tommy Wells and Yvette Alexander made a vague, late night announcement that Walmart would be opening up shop within the DC borders. And that was about all the news that they offered up, which naturally incited speculation in the DC media blogosphere all day Wednesday about where the granddaddy of big box retailers would land and when.
Well, The Washington Post reported late on Wednesday night that Walmart will open four stores in DC neighborhoods in serious need of a retail presence by 2012. The four planned stores will be located at the old Curtis Chevrolet at 5929 Georgia Avenue NW, at the intersection of New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE, along New Jersey Avenue NW, and at East Capitol and 58th streets SE, according to The Post.
This past July, it was reported that Walmart was “expected” to sign a lease for space at the intersection of New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road near the city’s northeast border with Maryland. The location was where renowned local developer Jim Abdo had planned to develop a massive billion-dollar mixed-use project. Those plans unraveled earlier this year due to lack of financing.
Advice to upstart bloggers out there: If you want to increase your page views, get the scoop on when and where the next grocery superstore is opening up in DC. Readers and the media can’t seem to get enough of it.
