In late 2017, UrbanTurf reported on likely plans by Howard University to seek to convert part of the Howard Center into residences. Now, those plans are in motion.
Today, Howard University announced that seven floors of 2225 Georgia Avenue NW (map) will be converted into furnished apartments. The 3rd-9th floors, most recently used as administrative office space, will house 176 below market-rate one- and two-bedroom apartments and micro-units ranging in size from 300 to 775 square feet.

The apartments will primarily be rented to graduate students, as well as university staff, associates and other eligible students. There will also be amenities on the third and fourth floors, including a fitness center, game room and lounge space. The converted floors are on a 41-year lease to 501(c)(3) Provident Group - Howard Center, Inc. The ground and second floor will continue to house a Starbucks and the university bookstore in partnership with Barnes and Noble.
“While we have renovated much of our housing stock over the past couple of years, the Howard Center project provides an improved foundation for our core graduate and professional programs which are key components of my growth strategy,” says Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick said in a statement. “This project is a unique opportunity for Howard University to drive the re-imagination of the Georgia Avenue Corridor.”
Construction is already underway and could be complete this summer.
