Andy Shallal isn't the only local businessman looking to open up a new location east of the Anacostia River.
UrbanTurf has learned that Ivy City Smokehouse has signed a letter of intent to bring a new outpost to the planned redevelopment that the Warrenton Group is working on at the Strand Theater in Deanwood.
The business will occupy the 5,600 square-foot space at 5131 Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue NE (map), as well as a 1,200 square-foot mezzanine level. The concept will be a full restaurant with a bar and a stage similar to its existing location.

The Smokehouse is expected to take possession of the space in January 2020 and will then undergo build-out of the space; PGN Architects will helm the design. The initial lease term will be ten years with options to extend for five-year terms thereafter.
News of this planned restaurant is another victory for underserved communities east of the River, for whom even food delivery options are scarce. While Shallal is working on opening a location of Busboys and Poets in historic Anacostia (and is also reportedly in talks about opening another restaurant at the Skyland redevelopment), the Deanwood area has not gotten quite as much attention on its road to revitalization.
