DC is nearly halfway towards meeting Mayor Muriel Bowser's goal of producing 36,000 new housing units by 2025.
Approximately 16,550 units delivered between January 2019 and August 2021, per the latest data available on the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) dashboard. This represents almost 46% of the desired total.
Of the units produced, 3,758 are affordable, more than 31% of the goal for affordable housing production. However, these units represent less than 23% of the total housing that has been produced in the last two years, so affordable housing production has not kept pace in proportion to the larger total. Under the current framework, any units that cost no more than 30 percent of household income for households earning up to 80 percent of median family income count toward "affordable housing”.

A report released in 2019 further specified affordable housing production goals for each of the city's ten planning areas. As seen in the graphic above, Rock Creek West remains the only area that hasn't produced any affordable units since January 2019. Meanwhile, the Far Southeast/Southwest planning area has exceeded its affordable housing production target by far, its 1,367 affordable units produced representing 122% of the goal set.
