In yet another way that DC is becoming an increasingly bicycle-friendly city, one extended-stay property company, aimed at business travelers settling in to a city for 30 days or more, has started offering free bikes to its residents.
AKA White House and AKA Virginia Square will now be offering bicycles for their tenants to use, an AKA representative told UrbanTurf. The company noted that the decision was based on the success of Capital Bikeshare and the rising popularity of bike commuting in the city.
AKA White House is located on 17th and H Street NW, in close proximity to several protected bike lanes, such as those that run down 15th Street NW and L Street NW. AKA Virginia Square sits at 3409 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington.
Designed by the Florida-based Republic Bike, the bicycles are lighter than Capital Bikeshare options, and come with a rack on the back and a bell on the handlebars (photo above). Republic Bike sells customizable bikes, and has provided companies like Google with a fleet of bikes to use on the company’s campus.
