This Week's Find: A Home on the Hill's Friendliest Block
1243 Walter Street SE
This Week’s Find is a rarely available home on what some people think of as The Friendliest Block on the Hill: Walter Street.
Walter Street is a one-way, one-block street just south of Lincoln Park that is famous for its warm, neighborly atmosphere. Block parties and sidewalk happy hours are a regular occurrence and neighbors generally look out for each other — all newcomers are quickly added to a shared spreadsheet and email listserv upon moving in.
Like many of the other homes on the street, this row house has a fairly small layout (850 square feet). The two bedrooms are a little tight, but the living room was opened up during a 1979 renovation with the help of a spiral staircase. Other aspects of the renovation, including the dome skylight and the modernized fireplace, stay true to the groovy sensibilities of the 1970s.
Living Room
The current residents purchased the home in 2005. They refinished the hardwood floors and renovated the kitchen, which opens to the living room and leads to a back patio, creating a completely open main floor.
Houses on Walter Street usually see an offer within a few days, and the new owners should expect a visit from the block’s welcome committee. More photos and details below.
