This Week's Find: A Co-op For a Chef in a Classic Wardman
Living room
In 1909, famed DC developer Harry Wardman build The Northumberland, a 67-unit building that fit in the irregularly shaped plot of land east of New Hampshire Avenue and south of V Street NW. The five sides of the building make for an interior that has a number of non-right angles, which create wide open spaces in the building’s units, including this 1,805 square-foot co-op.
Along with Albert Beers, Wardman designed the building in a classical, French-inspired style, and used materials that keep the building in impeccable shape even after a hundred years. With oversized windows, ionic columns and alternating bands of white stone and red brick, the exterior is striking.
Kitchen
A 2003 renovation brought this two-bedroom unit up to date and created a chef’s kitchen equipped with, among other things, multiple refrigerators. The many built-ins throughout the unit include bookshelves on both sides of an opening between the second bedroom (used currently as an office) and living room, as well as a row of shelving above the desk in the office.
Dining area into living room
The unit also has some interesting geometry, including a triangular kitchen with a rounded ceiling touching down on a diagonal wall of cabinetry. The main living area is open to the dining room and has a large picture window and a recessed, pale aqua ceiling to mark the space. As is the case with many co-ops with this much square footage in DC, the monthly fees are high, but cover a number of utilities and property taxes.
