From Foundry to Corner Store to Home on Capitol Hill
201 13th Street SE
This Week’s Find has a long history that begins when it was a sledgehammer foundry and ends with the story of one of Capitol Hill’s most beloved residents.
The residence at 201 13th Street SE (map) has had a long, varied life. It was originally a sledgehammer foundry, then it became a corner store and then up until recently, it served as the home of Margaret Roles, who passed away last November. Roles, a teacher who bought the house in the ’80s, became a fixture in the community known for volunteering and connecting people in the neighborhood.
The living room has a large skylight.
The storefront-turned-home, which is just off Lincoln Park, has a large open concept living room with 12-foot pressed tin ceilings, a large skylight and 20 large windows. One of the home’s two bedrooms sits in a loft overlooking the living room; the other is lined with a bank of windows. The living room is anchored by a large oak staircase that leads up to the loft, and a wood-burning fireplace.
A bedroom with an en suite overlooking the living area.
Outside there’s a patio for outdoor entertaining. The home’s unusual design, natural light and large open living space make it a rare find on Capitol Hill.
