The New Employee Benefit: Solar Panels
A handful of companies are now offering a new employee benefit that goes beyond a 401(k) and health insurance.
On Wednesday, 3M, Cisco, National Geographic Society and Kimberly-Clark announced that they would be offering employees the ability to purchase solar panel systems for their homes at a discounted rate.
The Solar Community Initiative, the first nationwide bulk solar purchase program, will allow employees at these companies, as well as friends and family, to purchase and install solar panels for their homes at a flat rate that is approximately 35 percent lower than the national average.
“This takes the bulk purchase model from individual neighborhoods and organizations to a national scale,” Keya Chatterjee, senior director of renewable energy at WWF, said in a press release. “A coast-to-coast, low, flat rate helps mitigate two major barriers of solar adoption — complexity and price.”
The program is offered through solar system company GeoStellar, which will handle everything from financing to installation for those that choose to participate. The discount is available whether you choose to buy or lease the panels.
While the program will be available to employees of the four companies indefinitely, any homeowner in the country can take advantage of the discount through the end of the year with the promotional code “solarmojo”.
