A Wedding Registry for Home Buyers
TIME this week reported on a little-known gem of a program from HUD that allows newlyweds to put cash wedding gifts from their friends and family toward a down payment.
The FHA Bridal Registry Program works like a standard wedding registry, except that instead of toasters and silverware, wedding guests contribute towards helping the newlyweds finance the purchase of a home. (The couple sets up a registry with their lender ahead of the wedding, then provides the details to invited guests.)
In addition to being a great way to help the couple afford a new home, the program also exempts these monetary gifts from the onerous documentation required when, for example, parents provide their child a large check to help out with a down payment.
Evidently the program isn’t restricted just to weddings. According to TIME, the HUD documentation reads that it can be used for those “legitimate occasions where substantial gifts are typically received by an individual or individuals,” which makes baby showers, civil unions, and college graduations fair game under the program as well.
