Trump Reveals Details About Luxury Hotel At Old Post Office: Figure 1

At an event hosted by The Washington Post on Wednesday morning, Donald and Ivanka Trump revealed more details about their plans to turn the Old Post Office building into a high-end hotel. And no, it will not look like this.

Donald Trump was in predictably over-the-top form (at one point, the moderator asked “Do you wake up in superlative mode?”), but he and his daughter, who is leading the project for the Trump company, revealed a few cool details about the project. Here are some of them:

  • The Trumps are planning on pricing the rooms in the new hotel at the highest end of the market, which sits at about $700 per night right now.
  • The clock tower, which offers panoramic views of DC, will continue to be open to the public, and the Trumps are planning on creating a dedicated public entrance and a museum for the tower. “We want to make an experience that currently doesn’t exist,” The Donald said.
  • They have been in talks with luxury retailers who have outposts at other Trump properties. Tiffany’s and Gucci were a couple names that Trump dropped.
  • The building behind the Post Office will be turned into a ballroom, which Ivanka said would be the largest luxury hotel ballroom in the country.
  • If things move forward as planned, they hope to open the hotel by the end of 2015.
  • Trump bid quite a bit of money on the building — $200 million. Donald said he plans on making this a destination hotel, stressing that a poorly done project at that location would not draw the same crowd, and would not have the same financial success. “Poorly executed, this is not a good location,” for a luxury hotel, he said. As a result, they are stressing high-end finishes, a grand atrium and a ballroom that will be in high demand for events. Both Trumps mentioned that they see this as a long-term investment.
  • 500 permanent jobs will be created at the hotel, and Ivanka hopes to find employees from the local community.
