This Week's Find: Alexandria Energy-Efficiency Before It Was Trendy
4833 Maury Lane
This Week’s Find is a custom 5,000 square-foot home that was built to be energy-efficient before it was the norm in the home building industry.
Built in 1987 on one acre at the end of a circular driveway in a secluded/wooded section of Alexandria, the five-bedroom, five-bath house was designed by the current owners and Northern Virginia-based architect John Savage. While it does not have the solar panels or green roof that might adorn energy-efficient properties today, the home has three-zone heating, double-paned windows, and 5.5-inch fiberglass batt insulation in order to save money on utilities.
Living Room
In addition to its energy-efficient aspects, the home has a wall of windows in a living room with extremely high ceilings, a huge master bedroom, and a large lower level with a bar and rec room. UrbanTurf’s favorite feature, though, is the back deck that looks out into the deep woods behind the house (see photo below). For pet owners, the property has an electric fence, so pets don’t go running off.
