Listed District Finds Craiglist Gems So You Don't Have To
A recent Listed District find.
Craigslist is a great resource for secondhand furniture hunters, whether you like IKEA or vintage. But sifting through the site requires enormous patience and persistence. Last month, Ellen Richardson started a blog that takes a lot of the hassle out of that process for DC residents.
Listed District (Tagline: I hunt, you gather) highlights a couple cool pieces each day for the area furniture hunter. After furnishing her own house via the website, Richardson couldn’t turn off her daily habit of scrolling through craigslist’s furniture section. Her friends kept her busy for a while, but soon she was running out of homes to furnish.
“I was finding tons of great stuff with no one to share it with,” she told UrbanTurf. “Thus, Listed District was born.”
Richardson lets the quality of the goods dictate the number of posts; if she finds seven great things one day, she’ll post them all. If she doesn’t find anything, no posts go up. She checks craigslist frequently and spends about an hour posting the items. She launched the website in mid-January and now has a weekly post on Prince of Petworth.
Listed District is full of mid-century modern and completely modern furniture and some more unusual finds; our favorite recent post is a “shake your weight off” vintage vibrating exercise machine for $2,750.
Since the site started getting some attention, Richardson has been calling on friends to help her find items outside of her areas of interest.
“I don’t know a thing about bikes, but they are a hugely popular item,” she said. “A friend finds one or two a week and posts about them for me.”
One of the best things she’s found since she started Listed District? A full Art Deco bar for just $15,000.
