From the Archives: Dennis Hopper's LA Compound
Next week, UrbanTurf will take its annual look back at the best, most intriguing and most peculiar things that DC’s residential real estate scene had to offer during the previous 12 months. But before we do that, we end this week with one of our favorite properties that we have covered outside of the DC region.
In 2010, the prolific actor/director/painter Dennis Hopper passed away after a battle with prostate cancer. Along with leaving behind a storied cinematic legacy, Hopper’s much-talked about Venice Beach home, known as Dennis Hopper’s Compound, hit the market shortly after the actor’s death.

The Frank Gehry-designed compound consists of 15,550 square feet of living space, made up of a main house built of corrugated steel, a small bungalow and three townhomes that have enormous loft spaces meant to house some of Hopper’s larger pieces of art. To show off his other passion — motorcycles — Hopper’s garage opened into a large art space. Out back, there is a small yard and lap pool.
When we covered the listing six years ago we noted that it might not be for everyone given its strange exterior and wide open interior, and that turned out to be right. Listed for $5.8 million, it took two years to sell at an $800,000 discount, and then went back on the market in 2013.
