DC Area Has Lowest Unemployment in the Country (Thanks to Fed Govt.)
The DC area has the lowest unemployment rate in the country, according to statistics released recently by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Over the last year, the unemployment rate has been 6 percent. The DC area ranked lowest in the country followed by Minneapolis-St. Paul (6.4 percent), Oklahoma City (6.5 percent) and Austin, Texas (6.9 percent).
The honor is thanks in large part to increased federal government spending and the jobs that has created. Also, it should be noted that while the DC area overall has low unemployment, DC proper has seen unemployment levels as high as 12 percent over the last year.
The national unemployment rate is not getting any better either, growing from 9.1 percent in May 2009 to 9.3 percent in May 2010.
