Metro Looking at New Credit Card Fare System
On Thursday, the board of directors at Metro took a step toward creating a payment system that would let riders pay for rides directly with credit cards, according to the Washington Examiner. The new system would allow riders to swipe a credit card and be charged for the appropriate fare and skip the lines at the fare machines.
While this prospect is in its initial stages, the board giving the agency permission to seek proposals from financial institutions is a step toward it becoming a reality.
From The Examiner:
“The full board must vote on the issue, but the idea has such widespread support among board members that they nearly gave the proposal presentation themselves. Metro staffers never presented their carefully prepared slide show.
‘This is very much looked at as the next wave of fare systems,’ said board member Gordon Linton, who represents Maryland. ‘It allows us to get out of all the management issues of having cards.’”
