DC to Get Two New Circulator Routes

Will the announcement of two new routes for DC’s Circulator bus system entice you to buy in a neighborhood you otherwise wouldn’t? The Washington Business Journal reported this morning that the new lines will replace undependable Metrobus service in certain sections of the city.

The Circulator is a limited route bus system focused on connecting areas in downtown DC. There are currently three routes:

  1. A line connecting Georgetown to Union Station via Pennsylvania Avenue
  2. The Convention Center/Shaw line that runs along the SW Waterfront
  3. A line that runs around the National Mall.

One of the new routes will run between Woodley Park and McPherson Square through Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, U Street and Logan Circle. The second line will connect Union Station with Barracks Row and Nationals Park. Both are expected to start running at the end of March, according to the Journal.

    Awesome!  So much better than trying to hoof it between Woodley Metro and Adams Morgan.  This is service that has been needed for a long time.

    The 90-series buses have always connected Woodley Park to Adams Morgan and the U Street Corridor.  The 98 *specifically* ran from the Woodley Metro to 9th & U before turning around.

    The subtext here is that a more expensive Circulator bus will replace the “always a quarter” 98 bus.  What a terrible route, as well.  To get to the U Street corridor,  you have to go up through Mt. Pleasant and Columbia Heights.

    Not impressed.  I’m down at the east end of U St.  Now, instead of catching the 98 for a quarter, I get to spend $1.25 to catch one of the other 90’s.  The Circulator won’t come within 5 blocks of my home.  Once again, the District is ignoring restaurants, retail and residential by skipping 5 blocks of area that is maturing, cleaning up and revitalizing.  Anyone notice the lines outside Ben’s lately?  Again, not impressed with this decision
