It's All Politics: The 5 Most Expensive Homes Sold in DC in 2017

2017 was a banner year for million-dollar home sales in DC, with more seven-figure homes sold in a year than ever before. With that in mind, UrbanTurf decided to take a look at the most expensive homes sold in the city this year. Spoiler alert: All of the homes are within one mile of each other, primarily in a neighborhood where every home sold this year went for over $1 million.

#5: The Obamas Put Down Roots in Kalorama

The fifth most-expensive home sale in DC this year came with a lot of fanfare, as we learned in late May that the former first family had purchased the Kalorama home they had been renting since leaving the White House in January. The three-story mansion was renovated several years ago and the large rooms on the main floor flow together, with huge built-ins, paneled walls, coffered ceilings and gridded windows.

#4: The Most Expensive Condo Sold in DC

The fourth most expensive home sold in DC this year was also the priciest condo to sell. The 4,400 square-foot penthouse is part of JBG Smith’s restoration of the historic Wardman Tower, named after distinguished local architect Harry Wardman who designed the building that would replace his personal home on the same site. The single-story penthouse unit is a standalone residence with its own driveway and entrance. The interior was designed by the renowned Deborah Berke, who incorporated such finishes as herringbone-patterned oak flooring, a custom Henrybuilt kitchen and automated window shades.

#3: Politics as Usual in Massachusetts Avenue Heights

This purchase in Massachusetts Avenue Heights kicked off the year’s multi-million dollar real estate sales, with then-incoming commerce secretary Wilbur Ross buying this seven-bedroom Beaux Arts mansion on a one-acre lot for nearly $11 million. The house overlooks Rock Creek Park and has a layout made for entertaining, with a catering kitchen, lower-level library, staff quarters and 12-person theater. The house had been on the market for a little over a year before the sale.

#2: Nearly 16,000 Square Feet to Treasure

Behind iron gates just around the corner from Commerce Secretary Ross’s house, the second most-expensive home to sell this year is also the largest of those featured today. The house sold to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin two weeks after Ross purchased his home. The house is packed with amenities such as a fitness room, sauna, wine cellar, movie room, solarium-style dining room, and an indoor pool beneath a pitched-roof skylight.

#1: $14 Million for Seven Bedrooms

The priciest sale of the year is back on Secretary Ross’s block: the Ourisman mansion. The Kingdom of Morocco purchased the house this summer shortly after the chairman of the Ourisman Automotive Group passed away. Details are scarce on the home’s features, as the previous owners purchased the property over two decades ago. It is also unclear whether the mansion will remain a residence or whether Morocco will use it for diplomatic business.
