Metro Needs Cash, May Hike Fares

Metro has proposed a significant increase in bus and rail fare prices to make up for a $116 million deficit, The Washington Post has reported.

If the hikes go through, paper farecard users will see a dramatic increase in cost per trip: under the new plan, a one-way trip during peak hours will cost a paper farecard user $6, no matter the distance. During off-peak hours, the trip would cost $4. Day passes will no longer exists. (This move and the increase of fares for paper farecard users seem pretty inhospitable for DC tourists.)

SmartTrip fares wouldn’t change too much: the maximum peak fare for a SmartTrip care would change from $5 to $5.75 and the minimum off-peak fare from $1.60 to $1.70. Daily commuters would spend at most about $360 more under the new system. Bus fares, parking fees and MetroAccess fares will be bumped up slightly.

Metro’s board will review the proposal on Thursday, public hearings will be held in February and March, and if they occur, most changes would go into effect on July 1st (except the Farecard change, which would go into effect after Labor Day to allow Metro to beef up their SmartTrip system).

    $6 one-way for a paper ticket user? This would have to make the DC system one of the most expensive in the world.  If the system operated at a world class level, it might begin to seem acceptable.

    I’d love to see the cash bus fare go up to an even $2.  This would encourage more smart trip use and save us all from the people paying their fare one dime at a time.

    A few ideas for Metro…

    1)Charge for weekend parking. Occasional users from suburbs should pay just the same as commuters do.
    2)Pave the escalators. They are never working anyway and we could all use a little more exercise, this will cut maintenance costs. Increase elevator efficiency and size to compensate for loss of escalators for those who NEED it (Handicapped, Strollers etc.).
    3)Charge a premium for large tourist events. If a million people are going to invade Washington DC for a cause, they are going to take the metro. They should be paying for the service and the likely increased maintenance and cleanup of the system their visit will cause. Charge $15 for an all-day paper card on weekends with events like the “Rallies to restore…”
    4)Get rid of the Unions. The guy scraping gum off the floor does not deserve to be making $27 an hour. Period.
    5)Secure the system. I watch hundreds of people jump the gates every day. Eliminate the jumpers and you increase revenue and decrease the trouble makers from being in the system.
    6)Find a leader who cares. Pay the Metro leadership based on success not status quo. Find some successful business people who don’t need a salary and give them a performance based pay plan. I bet they find a way to get the system back on track.

    If it’s anything like the NYC subway, you can blame the higher fees on the intractable union sucking the blood from riders, much like public sector unions suck the blood from taxpayers. The WMATA should first look to reduce pay, reduce or cut all workers’ pensions, and reduce benefits before looking to raise ticket prices.

    Yeah, let’s get rid of unions so we can have train operators working 12 hour shifts to make the same salary they were before.  That will make everything better!
