Justice Served: Maryland Foreclosure Con Artist Gets 12 Years in Prison

It is always nice to hear of justice being served to anyone that played a part in furthering the severity of the housing crisis that has affected the entire country.

The Washington Post recently reported that Joy Jackson of Lanham, Maryland was sentenced to 12 years in jail for stealing millions of dollars from DC-area home owners. Jackson’s Metropolitan Money Store (heck of a name for an illegal business) preyed on homeowners facing foreclosure by illicitly claiming to be able to help them out of their predicament.

The scam essentially involved taking the titles to the properties and “drain[ing] them of equity.” If that doesn’t get your blood boiling, what she spent the money on probably will.

From The Post:

“She used the cash to buy jewelry, fur coats and vacations, and to cover a lavish wedding at the Mayflower Hotel, where Patti LaBelle serenaded guests who feasted on lobster and drank Cristal.”

The Post reported that 117 people fell victim to the scam, but that “hundreds more have been identified in a related civil lawsuit.”
