Howard University May Add Residential Component to Howard Center on Georgia Avenue: Figure 1

Howard University continues reconsidering its real estate portfolio with plans to seek a zoning modification that would add residential or dormitory uses to an office-and-retail building on Georgia Avenue.

The building at 2225 Georgia Avenue NW (map) now houses a Starbucks and the university bookstore in partnership with Barnes and Noble. While details are still forthcoming, university officials are beginning the community engagement process and plan to file an application for the change in use with zoning officials soon.

These plans are the latest in a string of planned redevelopments that the university is initiating for its real estate, from the recent designation of a development team for the Divinity School in Brookland and resuscitation of plans for a Town Center to various dormitories that are being renovated as traditional apartment buildings in LeDroit Park and Columbia Heights.
