Former Woodmont Grill Space in Bethesda Sells, Will Become Ted's Bulletin

The vacant Woodmont Grill space in Bethesda has a buyer with a long restaurant resume. 

Steve Salis has purchased the roughly 6,300-square-foot property at 7715 Woodmont Avenue from Hillstone Restaurant Group, the longtime operator of the space's former occupant, Woodmont Grill. The $7 million deal closed last week. Salis plans to open a Ted's Bulletin in the space in 2027, which would become the all-day diner concept's 10th location in the DC area.

The property has sat empty since last fall, when Woodmont Grill abruptly closed one Tuesday night, catching both customers and staff off guard. Hillstone attributed the closure to a mix of factors, including a "diminishment of parking over time" and difficulty keeping the restaurant adequately staffed to meet its service standards. The restaurant had deep roots in Bethesda: Hillstone — known for concepts including Houston's, Gulfstream, and R+D Kitchen — was founded in 1976, and the Woodmont Avenue location originally opened as a Houston's before being rebranded as Woodmont Grill in 2008. By the time it closed, it had been serving Bethesda diners since 1992, building a following for its rotisserie chicken, prime rib, and live jazz nights along the way. 

Ted's Bulletin is no stranger to expansion in the region. The retro American diner concept first opened in 2010 on Capitol Hill, and Salis acquired the chain in 2017 as part of his broader Catalogue portfolio, which also includes Federalist Pig, Sidekick Bakery, and Kramerbooks. Since then, Ted's has steadily added locations across the region — including 14th Street, Ballston Quarter, and NoMa. 

The 2027 opening timeline suggests a build-out period ahead, but the acquisition gives Catalogue a foothold in one of downtown Bethesda's highest-profile restaurant spaces.
