A downtown DC church has big residential plans on the boards.
The Church of the Epiphany at 1317 G Street NW (map) has filed plans with the city to demolish the rear portions of the church and construct a ten-story plus penthouse addition that will include 74 affordable units.

"The Church proposes to demolish the Parish House additions and replace them with a new addition that would include newly designed spaces to meet the twenty-first century needs of the parish and would provide affordable housing to those in need," a new historic preservation filing stated.
The new addition, designed by Teass/Warren Architects, would wrap around the north end of the church. The first three floors of the tower will align with the existing floor levels of the church; the remaining space in the tower will be allocated to approximately seventy-four affordable housing units.
The Church of the Epiphany is just the latest church in the city with residential plans in its future. In May, the Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes filed plans to build a 40-unit apartment building on land it owns along Massachusetts Avenue.
