The redevelopment of a police and fire station along U Street could be moving forward.
Last week, DC's Zoning Commission advanced a map amendment application that would change the zoning designation for DC fire station 9 at 1617 U Street NW and the Third District police station at 1620 V Street NW to allow for medium-to-high density development. Details of that zoning change are included below, but the modification would essentially allow for a couple hundred residential units to be constructed at the site.

The decision from the Zoning Commission was met with criticism from The 1617 Project, a community group opposing the amendment.
“Last night's meeting blatantly disregarded comprehensive urban planning principles in D.C.," a statement read. "Despite expert testimony clearly proving that MU-10 rezoning drives land speculation, displaces small local businesses, and evicts lower- and moderate-income residents in favor of luxury housing and higher rents, the Zoning Commission willfully ignored these warnings.”
The map amendment proposal will now go to the National Capitol Planning Commission for review before returning to the Zoning Commission for a vote in the fall.
