The DC Council passed a bill on Tuesday that could bring thousands of new electric car-charging stations to the city in the coming year.

The Comprehensive Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Access, Readiness, and Sustainability Amendment Act of 2024, sponsored by DC Councilmember Charles Allen, was passed on Tuesday. The goal of the bill is to install 5% of ports relative to the number of registered electric vehicles in the city.

There are a number of measures included in the legislation, but among other things, it will require all new commercial and multi-unit buildings that have parking lots and garages to include infrastructure that accommodates EV charging stations starting in 2027. It also gives condo and co-op owners the right to install EV charging ports under certain requirements.

The bill also establishes an Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program aimed at incentivizing the purchase, installation, and upgrades of EV charging ports. Under this provision, a homeowner would be able to use a voucher or similar instrument to supplement or cover the cost of purchasing and installing an EV charging station.

The legislation is now awaiting the Mayor's approval to become law.
