Homeowners in the DC region continue to stay in their homes for a long time.
A recent Redfin report shows that in the DC area, the median homeowner had spent 13.3 years in their home in 2024, an increase from 11.6 years in 2014. Nationwide, owners are staying put just under 12 years, a drop from 2020 when this was above 13 years.

"Homeowner tenure declined slightly each year from 2020 to 2023 mainly because of the pandemic-driven moving frenzy," the report stated. "At the start of the pandemic, record-low mortgage rates and the increasing prevalence of remote work motivated many Americans to move."
As for where homeowners are staying put the longest, that would be California. In Los Angeles, the median tenure for homeowners is nearly 20 years; in San Jose, it is just north of 18 years.
