Bread for the City Unveils Plans for New Anacostia Headquarters

Bread for the City is moving forward with a new headquarters building in Anacostia just down the block from its main service center. 

Plans filed with DC show a three-story building at 1640 Marion Barry Avenue SE (map) consolidating the organization's food, social service, and community programming.

The building splits its space between Bread for the City's own operations and a separate space earmarked for community use. The ground floor is organized around food service and a community lobby with separate entries for retail, food service, and community visitors, while the upper two floors house multi-purpose rooms, a resource library, a community lounge, and administrative offices. Below grade, the building includes additional multi-purpose space, bike storage, and an 11-space parking garage.

Inside, the building is laid out to give staff and visitors flexible gathering space, including a coffee shop and break room alongside more traditional office and program areas. Michael Marshall Design is the architect for the new building. 

Bread for the City already operates a 28,000-square-foot Southeast Center nearby at 1700 Marion Barry Avenue SE, which opened in 2020 and brought the organization's medical, dental, and vision services east of the Anacostia River for the first time. The new building would add a second purpose-built facility to that stretch of the corridor, expanding the nonprofit's footprint in the neighborhood as it continues serving an estimated 10,000 DC residents each month.
