Capitol Hill Safeway Redevelopment
Representatives from Safeway, developer Foulger-Pratt and architect BKV Group presented the preliminary concept to redevelop the Safeway store at 14th and D Streets SE. The 50,000 square-foot Safeway would be replaced with a 50-foot tall matter-of-right development, delivering a new 60,000 square-foot Safeway store below three floors of apartments. The range for the apartment count would be between 320 and 345 units; tentatively 60-70 percent of those apartments would be studios and one bedrooms. The building will also have a setback penthouse with residential use and amenity space. The main grocery entrance would be at the 14th and D Street intersection.
