Axis Condos:
Affordable, Luxury Condos in Capitol Hill
The website for Axis Condos immediately excites the reader with mention of “thumbprint door access,“ a feature that summons some type of James Bond-like theme. Unfortunately, this feature did not make it into the final product, however 90 percent of what the developers wanted did make it and, as a result, there are a number of features that help separate Capitol Hill’s newest luxury condos from developments in more popular DC zip codes.
Location
Axis Condos is located at 243 15th Street SE (see map here), a few blocks southeast of Lincoln Park in Capitol Hill. The neighborhood’s other famed amenities like Eastern Market and Barracks Row are fifteen minutes on foot. There is a Safeway grocery store about three blocks away, and a Harris Teeter a couple blocks beyond that.
Living Space
Axis Condos is a 20-unit project that was built by Macy Development. Ken Johnson of DCRealEstate.com, which is marketing and selling the units, told UrbanTurf that their goal was to give the development a very modern and contemporary feel. That is why all of the units have been pre-wired for Wi-Fi and cable and all have built-in speakers. Things were supposed to get really geeky as the developers wanted thumbprint door access for the units, but Johnson said this was ultimately not possible.
The condo units range in size from 775 to 1,378 square feet, and condo fees are between $223 to $329 a month. At the development’s open house yesterday, a representative from DCRealEstate said that fifty percent of the units have sold. Each unit comes with some sort of outdoor space and everyone has access to the roof deck via the elevator.
The one condo on display at the open house was a 900 square-foot, one-bedroom, one-den unit. When you enter the unit, there is a narrow entry hallway that leads into the kitchen and living area. Off of this hallway is one of the two bathrooms and the den which is categorized as such because it is smaller than the bedroom and windowless.
The kitchen and living area share the same large open space with the kitchen looking into the living area. According to Ken Johnson, the interior finishes are what separate the units at Axis Condos from other projects. This is evident in the kitchen where there are tilestone counters, new GE appliances and cabinet-depth refrigerators. The bedroom off of the living area is large enough to fit a Queen bed, two nightstands and a chest of drawers while still having a four-foot clearance at the foot of the bed. There is a patio just off the living room that is large enough to host small barbeques. (The larger size of the patio is unique to this ground-floor unit; the units above it have outdoor balconies that are considerably smaller.) All the units at Axis have a washer/dryer and central A/C.
Price Range for Available Units

| Two-Bedrooms | Starting at $389,900 |
Parking & Transportation
There are twelve underground parking spaces, however only the two largest units have a space included in their listing price. The rest of the spaces are available for $25,000 apiece. Street parking in this section of Capitol Hill isn’t exactly plentiful, but Axis residents should usually be able to find a free space within a few blocks anyway.
For the carless, it is just under a ten-minute walk to the Potomac Avenue Metro stop on the orange and blue lines. The 32, 34, 35 and 36 bus lines also run downtown about a five-minute walk from the property.
Bottom Line
The units at Axis Condos are affordable alternatives to much pricier developments like the recently opened Metropole in Logan Circle. While they may be in a slightly less desirable location, they offer a similar level of quality with various high-tech offerings and outdoor space for all the units.
Example Apartment
Price: $389,900
Condo Fee: $269
This 886 square-foot one-bedroom, two-bath unit was the same unit on display at the open house. It has a den that could also work as a small second bedroom or office, and the patio space is a great asset at Axis, as most of the units just have a balcony.
