Abingdon Row:
Luxury with a Touch of Colonial America

Abingdon Row
Abingdon Row

Abingdon Row has the look, at least from the outside, of a place that Thomas Jefferson might have wanted to live if he were around today. However, while the arched windows and columns give off the feel of an 18th century estate, the sleek interior is that of a 21st century luxury condo.

Location

Abingdon Row is located at 1023 North Royal Street (see map here) in the Old Town section of Alexandria. The development is minutes from the banks of the Potomac River and is just across the river from Southwest DC. It is about a fifteen-minute walk from the condos to the Braddock Road Metro station (blue and yellow lines).

Living Space

Abingdon Row is a 53-unit condo development that blends in well with the other buildings in Old Town because the builders focused on implementing many 18th century architectural features (columns, arched windows, iron-railed terraces) common in the neighborhood into the project’s design. The development offers one, two and three bedroom units with over thirty different floorplans that range in size from 720 square feet to 1,900 square feet.

The development was built by the in-house construction team at Holladay Corporation, the firm responsible for 1800 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington. While the exterior looks like it is from the Colonial era, the floorplans have an open, almost loft-like feel. Most units are pre-wired for surround sound and have the expected package of granite kitchen and baths, hardwood floors, and all stainless steel appliances. All the units have full-size washer and dryers, and most have some sort of outdoor space (balcony, patio or roof deck).

An 850 square-foot one-bedroom model on the second floor has a long foyer entrance when you come in that leads to an enormous kitchen and living area. The kitchen (14 feet by 8 feet) has all stainless steel appliances and granite countertops as well as a wide breakfast bar that could fit about three stools. The living and dining area (15 feet by 22 feet) is framed on one side by a wall of windows. The room is large enough to have an area for a dining room table and chairs without encroaching on the living room space. The bedroom is off to the left of this area and has a walk-in closet. This unit also has a balcony and additional storage space.

Price Range for Available Units

One Bedrooms Starting in the low $300,000s

Parking & Transportation

The development has secure underground parking, but the reserved spaces only come with select units. Street parking in this section of Old Town is relatively easy to find.

As noted above, the Braddock Road Metro station is about a fifteen-minute walk from Abingdon Row. If you have a car, the George Washington Parkway is just two blocks away and Reagan National Airport is only a few minutes drive. It takes about fifteen minutes to get to downtown DC depending on traffic.

Bottom Line

Old Town Alexandria is a place where you can visit the childhood home of Robert E. Lee and if you head out to the bars at night the clientele that you see is more often in their 40s than their 20s or 30s.

We point this out because while the Abingdon Row condos are extremely spacious and well-crafted units for the DC area, this is a neighborhood that caters to a slightly older condo-buying demographic, and young professionals should know that this area might not have as much to offer them as some hipper DC zip codes. That said, many people would consider that a very good thing.

I live in the building and it’s great.  The neighborhood is also really convenient.  The building is right next to Montgomery park, which has a dog park and lit tennis courts.  Also, the GW parkway, a bike trail and a Washington Sports Club are only a few blocks away.  Trader Joes, Giant, an ABC store, and 3-4 solid restaurants are all within 4 blocks.  King street is about half a mile away.

The roof deck in the building is awesome.  It has views of the river and National Harbor.

It’s definitely a unique building and something that anyone that’s looking in Arlington should consider.
