Hillcrest

Hillcrest

The southeast DC neighborhood of Hillcrest is frequently identified for what it lacks. There are not many restaurants, only a few bars and no shopping areas. However, what the neighborhood does not have in amenities and services it makes up for with beautiful homes and some of the best lawns and gardens in the city. » More

Del Ray

Del Ray

The Del Ray area in Alexandria, Virginia has an eclectic, artistic vibe that gives it the feel of a small town in Vermont or northern California. With its single-level bungalows, small boutique specialty shops and lack of chain stores and high-rise condos, Del Ray seems slightly out of place just miles from the DC border. » More

Capitol Riverfront

Capitol Riverfront

The Nationals Stadium is just the beginning. When all is said and done, the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood that surrounds DC's new baseball stadium will feature 25 million square feet of development including 9,000 residential units, 15 million square feet of office space, 900,000 square feet of retail and 1,200 hotel rooms. While only a fraction of those things have been completed, we decided to see what the neighborhood looks like in the midst of transition. » More

Downtown Silver Spring

Downtown Silver Spring

In the 1990s, downtown Silver Spring was considered more of an eyesore than a destination in the DC area. The neighborhood bisected by the northern section of Georgia Avenue was a desolate place with a few lonely pedestrians out at night and body shops outnumbering good restaurants about 2 to 1. However, a turnaround began in 2000 bolstered by large public and private investments and the arrival of two notably creative institutions. Now, the area has a new lease on life and is attracting young and old alike. » More

Penn Quarter

Penn Quarter

If you had asked a cab driver to take you to the Penn Quarter in the early 1990s, he probably would've corrected you, and told you that Penn Station is in New York City. That is because this downtown DC neighborhood -- which is now the site of high-end condo developments, expensive restaurants and DC's largest sporting venue -- did not really exist back then. However, what was once a drab set of city blocks dominated by office buildings has been transformed by the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation into one of the most sought after destinations for condo buyers in the District. » More

Dupont Circle

Dupont Circle

It is arguable that, if money were no object, young adults moving to DC would always choose to live in Dupont Circle. It boasts some of the city’s best restaurants, shops and bars, and its central location makes it the most convenient DC neighborhood for anyone working downtown. Unfortunately, you need money to live in Dupont. Home prices are the second highest in DC just behind Georgetown, and those great shops and restaurants mentioned above are not cheap. » More

Clarendon

Clarendon

Clarendon is a suburb in Arlington, Virginia that seems like it was made for accommodating people who didn’t want to live in DC, but wanted to be very close. It is dominated by high-rise condos, and the prevalence of these developments has meant that the real estate market has had its ups and downs in recent years. » More

American University Park

American University Park

The American University Park (AU Park) neighborhood is about as suburban as you can get and still be within the DC borders. It is almost completely residential (except for a short stretch of shops and restaurants along Wisconsin Avenue), populated mainly by families and senior citizens and it boasts some of DC's best public schools. » More

Petworth

Petworth

Petworth, one of DC's largest neighborhoods, has inspired a good deal of debate in recent months, particularly when it comes to issues like neighborhood character, racial make-up and real estate investment potential. » More

Shaw/Howard U

Shaw/Howard U

In mid-April, a debate was started on DCist, a blog that highlights goings-on in the DC area, about the true boundaries of the Shaw neighborhood. The post elicited just shy of 100 comments with folks offering their take (and some just starting debates of their own). » More
