Will a Target Open in Downtown DC?
DC’s existing Target in Columbia Heights.
A famous bullseye could be coming to downtown DC.
On Wednesday morning, the Post’s Jonathan O’Connell reported that Target is thinking about opening up another store downtown.
The big-box store is considering moving into 555 12th Street NW (map), a space once partially occupied by ESPN Zone. The retailer may choose to shrink their ordinarily expansive layout into their new “CityTarget” format, which is about two-thirds the size of a typical store and packed with smaller sized items that one could presumably walk, rather than drive, away with.
O’Connell noted that Target has been in talks with the current owners of the building, but there is now a hitch: the building is up for sale, and it is unknown if the new owners would be open to leasing to Target as an anchor tenant. Another possible complication is the fate of DC’s “living wage” bill, which is currently sitting on Mayor Gray’s desk. Target may be one of the retailers who would have to increase their minimum wage to $12.50 per hour if the bill becomes a law.
