A wall of exposed brick adds a little historic character to the living space, which is set off from the kitchen but not totally separate. The condo fee, at $480 a month, is a little on the high side, but the unit comes with that most sought-after of amenities in this neighborhood: a parking space.

If you head outside of DC, you get more mileage out of a $700,000 home buying budget. This 5,400 square foot home on three acres in Gaithersburg is proof of that. Built 25 years ago, the home has a sunroom and a huge back patio with plenty of room for dining and entertaining, plus a wet bar. While the home is quite large, the eventual buyer may want to update the finishes and remove some of the wallpaper after closing.
