UrbanTurf Reader Asks: What Are the Best Interior Decorating Websites?

by UrbanTurf Staff

In this installment of UrbanTurf Reader Asks, a reader who recently purchased a condo asks UT readers for their recommendations of the best websites for advice on how to decorate a new home.

I recently purchased my first home, a two-bedroom condo in the U Street Corridor. I don’t have enough money left over to hire an interior decorator (and I am excited to decorate the home on my own), so I am looking around the internet to find some inspiration for how to decorate my new place.

Does anyone have any favorite websites that they regularly turn to for decorating advice, etc.?

apartmenttherapy.com has tons of inspiration.  depending on your style, designspongeonline.com and younghouselove.com (lots of tutorials) are also good.

Even though it focuses a lot on architecture, I like Dezeen (http://www.dezeen.com/)

I like Making it Lovely http://makingitlovely.com - a blog by a young designer. She blogs about renovating her own house, and also comments a lot on fashion, home furnishings, etc.

Second on the apartmenttherapy.com recommend—but the site is so huge it can be tough to find the best content (and honestly, a lot of the site is no longer relevant to smaller apartments/condos; boooo!).  If you like looking at others’ spaces—apartments & condos—that are very popular/highly-rated, check out their Small Cool contest.

Just these 2 sets will keep you busy for quite a while.

I like apartmenttherapy.com as well.  Regarding interior designers, a lot of local stores provide complimentary design services if you spend a certain amount in their respective stores.  If you are planning to buy a new couch or other large pieces of furniture, you might consider doing so from a store where they offer these services.  I had a designer from Mitchell Gold come over and she not only saved me from buying a rug that would have been too light for the space, but she measured the entire condo and, thanks to her, my furniture actually fits.  The designer also helped with paint colors.

Good luck!  Congratulations on your new place!

Apartment Therapy is great, but it can be a bit overwhelming unless you’re looking for something in particular.

My current favorite place for inspiration is Lonny Magazine: http://www.lonnymag.com/Home.html

Great post!  I’ve been trying to find a blog myself. I came across this:

    http://laissezfairedesign.blogspot.com/2008/09/10-most-influential-design-bloggers.html

I really like ‘ikeahacker’ it’s not quite interior design but has some great ideas about small projects like upholsering a headboard, etc.

I’m a little behind, but I agree with the Apartment Therapy suggestion. I also like High-Heeled Foot in the Door. (high-heelfootinthedoor.blogspot.com) There are links to a lot of other great blogs on High Heeled Foot in the Door, as well (along the bottom right).

We always offer a free initial design consultation. We also have a great website to look through and are located in the U st. area.

Design sites can be inspiring even though they might not really focus on interior design holistically. My two favorites are contemporist.com which focuses on modern architecture and interior design; and http://emmas.blogg.se/ which is a simple, semi-personal Swedish modern/warm/light design blog that expresses a very clear simple style that happens to appeal to me. But it’s just one style unlike a big site like apartmentherapy where I only like something from every 40th post. So I encourage you to find a blog that reinforces your personal style.
