This Week's Find: Worth The Climb in Woodley Park
2130 Cathedral Avenue NW
The stretch of Cathedral Avenue that connects Connecticut Avenue with Calvert Street is not a road frequently traveled on by most DC residents. However, if you have driven along it and looked up, you have probably seen the home Errol Adels designed as his primary residence when he lived in the city twenty years ago.
The house is not for those who aren’t willing to get some exercise on the way to the front door as there are 36 steps between the sidewalk and the front door. The climb is worth it, though, as the views from the living and dining rooms (and master bedroom) look out over much of Rock Creek Park.
Adels, who used to be a managing partner at the architecture firm of Angelos Demetriou & Associates, rented the house next door (to what was a vacant lot) for a number of years. Once he purchased the land where the house now sits, getting the property built was not an easy task. The Washington Post reported in 1992 that the steep slope of the land meant that the foundation had to be excavated by hand, and Adels said that “a team of diggers would show up for a week at a time, collect their Friday paychecks and never come back.”
Living room
The home was completed in 1988, and the finished product has a number of noteworthy features including a master bedroom suite with a fireplace and a 30-foot terrace, a living room with huge windows and 18-foot ceilings, and a second-floor dining room that has an attached terrace. There is also two-car parking in front of the home.
