Stilted: English Homes Now Designed To Avoid Floods: Figure 1

The realities of climate change are now having a marked effect on how the English design homes.

Fast Company recently reported on a new home design out of England that raises up on stilts when needed to avoid floods.

“The proposed house would weigh 71 tons, and could be raised to five feet in just five minutes,” Fast Company stated. “The idea is that you watch out for flood warnings—England has been flooding a lot more often in recent years, and will continue to if climate change continues unchecked—and raise the house out of harm’s way.”

This is certainly not the first time that a home has used stilts to accommodate the environment around it, but it is the first time we have seen a house that is able to avoid a natural disaster at a moment’s notice.
