Silver Line Aims For Summer Opening: Figure 1

You can almost hear those anticipating the opening of the Silver Line saying, “Here we go again.”

In a press release issued Thursday, Metro announced that it had reached an agreement with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority that could result in the new Silver Line opening this summer.

From the release:

Under the agreement, Metro will allow the Airports Authority additional time to complete certain items after the project is turned over to Metro, but prior to the start of passenger service. Without the agreement, the Airports Authority would have been required to complete all items before Metro takes control, meaning an opening date that would be later in the year.

The starts and stops associated with the opening of the line have been well documented. Earlier this month, WTOP reported that the project’s first phase, encompassing the McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro, Spring Hill and Wiehle-Reston East stations, could be in operation by July 4. But then just last week, news came that the there were issues with the automatic train control system that would take a year to complete. It now appears that the train control system can be fixed while a portion of the line is open for service.

Stay tuned for more updates. Of course, if you’re ever curious if the line is open, you can always go to a site specifically set up about its status.
