“If I Had $2 Million” Listing: Ultra-Modern Home in Penn Quarter

by Mark Wellborn

image

This week’s If I Had $2 Million listing certainly caters to a particular type of buyer. The ultra-modern three-level, three-bedroom unit was designed by architect Robert Gurney and has a layout and design that is not often seen in DC. Each floor is about 100-feet deep and the upper level has an indoor/outdoor loft space with electric doors that offer access to front and rear roof decks. Also for sale is the 1,600 square-foot commercial space on the ground floor that is currently occupied by the Chinatown Coffee Company. More details and photos below.

This place is unique but quite expensive.  I can’t fully appreciate it via the photos.

Hmmmm, I can’t really say that I like it, at least from these photos. Looks like a boutique Norweigan hotel or something.

What material are these blue floors? Polished concrete?

This place was just written up in last week’s Dupont Current, p. 13:

i am amazed how far reaching the penn quarter actually is. before you know it the boundries will stretch from virginia to maryland. saying this is the penn quarter is like saying gaithersburg is north potomac or woodbridge is southern springfield. let’s get a grip on our boundries. the DC government website lists the penn quarter’s boundries as 9th street to the west, penn ave to the south, g street to the north and 5th street to the east.

    JJ,

This property is only a block outside the DC government boundaries that you cite, so I don’t think it’s a stretch to call it Penn Quarter. Arguably “Chinatown” is more accurate, but many folks use the names Penn Quarter and Chinatown interchangeably anyway.

That said, your point is noted. Thank you for the feedback.

I routinely see housing for sale in the area of 10th-12th St. NW at or above Massachusetts Ave. advertised as being in “Penn Quarter.”  Living in that same neighborhood, I can tell you it’s not Penn Quarter!  (Technically it’s Shaw but it doesn’t seem too much like “Shaw,” either.)  Within a few years, we’ll have CityCenterDC separating this neighborhood from Chinatown and Penn Quarter, which may give this little ‘hood more of an identity, which I suppose is a good thing.  Especially if Shaw and the Convention Center area continue to stagnate.
