Colorado Woman Wins Raffled Maryland Mansion

Last Friday, a Colorado woman was chosen as the winner in the much-publicized lottery of an Edgewater, Maryland mansion. Current owner Tom Walters put his 6,000-square-foot dream home up for raffle last summer after it had sat on the market for months without garnering much interest. Walters hoped to sell 31,500 tickets at $50 apiece, grossing just over $1.5 million. While the raffle attracted international media attention, he was only able to sell about 24,000 tickets. Karen McHale, of Idaho Springs, Colorado, purchased two of those tickets and received the surprising call on Friday letting her know she’d won.

So what is McHale planning on doing with her new $1.25 million (appraised) acquisition? After paying roughly $300,000 to Uncle Sam in various taxes, McHale will reportedly sell the house at auction. “I obviously want someone to buy the house who would live there and obviously enjoy it,” she was quoted in the Washington Post, which has the whole story. “It really looks super nice.”
