Busboys and Poets Headed to Brookland

A new branch of Busboys and Poets will open in Brookland’s Monroe Street Market next year, UrbanTurf has learned.

The restaurant will occupy 7,400 square feet at the new development and open in the fall of 2014. It will be the sixth Busboys location to open in the area.

Monroe Street Market is a $200 million development that will bring residential, retail and artist studio space to Brookland. Located on Catholic University’s south campus, the 8.9 acre plot, bounded on the north side by Michigan Avenue, is located on five city blocks adjacent to the Brookland-CUA Metro. When complete, the community will consist of 718 residential units, 45 townhomes, 80,000 square feet of street-level retail, 15,000 square feet of artist studio space, a community arts center, and 850 underground parking spaces.

Busboys and Poets had been rumored to be coming to Monroe Street Market for some time, but today’s report was the first confirmation. Busboys will join Barnes and Noble, Potbelly, &Pizza, and a restaurant from the owners of Meridian Pint at the new project.

    Isn’t this technically in Edgewood?  Brookland is to the east of the train tracks, Edgewood to the west, as I understand it.

    very useful comment.  I didn’t know that the community boundaries are that strong in DC, as if there are village lines.  It might be in what some might consider Edgewood, but it is at the Brookland metro, and services the larger Brookland community.  Edgewood is a small enclave mostly known for shootings and drugs.  And while that has changed some in recent years, I am sure that there is little desire to attach itself to that.

    Moreover some might call it University Heights.

    I hope you weren’t being snide with your first sentence.  Anyway, you could say the same thing about Fish in the Hood which is two blocks from the Petworth metro station.  But it’s definitely in Park View.  This project is definitely not in Brookland no matter how much someone doesn’t want to be attached to Edgewood.

    Look, I get that neighborhood boundaries (and names) aren’t concrete and definitely change with time, but the people saying the Monroe Street Market is in Brookland will say that until Edgewood gets a better reputation.  Then they’ll say it’s in Edgewood.  So I’m firmly convince it’s a bunch of BS to make potential investors/customers feel safe.  Let’s call a spade a spade.

    The development is in Edgewood. Developers can market properties however they choose e.g. Chancellor’s Row at Brookland Metro but that development is still in Edgewood.  (Note: The Washington Post reported it wrong and they should do better.)  Many DC neighborhoods HAD negative reputations.  How can a neighborhood improve its reputation if people don’t acknowledge the good?
